I've got a fresh '65 383 (about 20 miles on it) which is stock except for the 440 Source roller rockers and shafts. Cam break in has been done and the
motor has been running great; 16" of vacuum at idle and plenty of torque. I went to a buddies house today to let him check it out. When I started it to
let him hear it the vacuum dropped to 10" after a couple seconds of idling and it started knocking. I had the car towed home and I'm waiting for it to
cool down before I start poking around. Anybody have any ideas what it could be? I'm pretty certain it's valve train related becasue of the drop in
vacuum. If it was a rod bearing or main bearing it wouldn't have affected the vacuum.

Oh boy I had something like this happen to me on a new engine. the knocking did not happen under load but at idle. It was the fuel pump rod all the new parts
some how wore it down and it made a knocking sound. The man who built my engine has put a new rod in every engine since. I know you mentioned a vacuum drop but
I thought I would throw that out there. I hope it nothing too serious. Let us know. Good luck.

Hey Newport69conv, the fuel pump pushrod may be the solution to a problem I'm having with the 383 that I built for my convertible. There is some kind of
knock when the engine first starts when cold, but then it goes away after a few minutes. Seems to be in-time with one of the cylinders, but doesn't change
if I pull individual spark plug wires, so I don't think it's a wrist pin or rod bearing. It didn't start doing this til after the engine had
probably 200 miles on it. (Can't say for sure, the odometer is broken.) I tried listening to the top-end and couldn't pinpoint it. I tried jacking-up
the car and listening underneath and couldn't pinpoint it. My brother came over for a listen (he has a good ear for these things) and he was stumped too. I
pulled the driver's valvecover and checked the valvetrain and everything seemed okay. That's as far as I got into the diagnosis before I had to put it
in storage for the winter.
Rexus, do you know roughly where your knocking sound came from? Top-end? Bottom-end? Driver's side or passenger side? Do you have an oil pressure gauge on it? What happened to the RPM when the vacuum dropped and knocking started?

I pulled the valve covers today. One of the rockers on the passenger's side was VERY loose. I could move the pushrod up and down between the lifter and the
rocker. On every rocker there is about 3 threads showing on the adjusters. The one on the loose rocker was showing 6-7 threads. The strange thing is the lock
nut was tight. Is it possible the adjuster backed out eventhough the lock nut was tight? I'm wondering if the lifter was somehow stuck when the valves were
adjusted and it "broke free" causing the clearance issue or the lifter collapsed. Either that or the cam lobe is wiped. It's just strange to me
that this particular rocker adjuster was so far out compared to the 15 others.
Do you have an oil pressure gauge on it? -No pressure gauge, only idiot light. The light did not come on. What happened to the RPM when the vacuum dropped and knocking started? -It started running rough. I'm not sure if the RPM dropped, no tach.

I dug into it today. Thanks to Steve (70 71 300) for helping me out. We pulled the lifter and all was fine. It still had a nice crown on the tip, it was not collapsed and the cam lobe looked fine. We reinstalled everything
and adjusted the valve. Before we fired it I decided to do a compression test on the cylinder (#6). I'm glad I did. There was ZERO compression. We did not
test all the cylinders but #4 registered at 145 psi.. Next was the leak down test. With both valves closed on #6 and the rockers backed off a slight bit to
ensure they were closed, we filled #6 with compressed air (80 psi). It blew straight out the tailpipe. Needless to say, we didn't fire it. There is
definiely an issue with the #6 exhaust valve which just happens to be the one I thought was out of adjustment yesterday. We weren't able to pull the head
today; it'll have to wait until next weekend. On a side note, the tip of the spark plug was slightly off kilter and the gap was opened up to .042 (initally
gapped at .035) and there was a noticable ding on the electrode. Something hit it. I think a seat dropped. Here'e the plug:

Yeah I was sorry to hear about that happening to you... again. If there is a bright side is that once this engine is right it will be right for a long long
time.

That freakin' 383 is being a major PITA for you. Bummer and best wishes. I hope the 440 I had overhauled for my 66 NYer will behave better. A LOT better

After finally getting settled on a set of heads, I got her all buttoned back up and running. I had purchased a set of Stealth Heads on an impulse buy but the more research I did I decided it was more work than I wanted to hassle with (clearancing pushrods, milling, etc.). I finally ended up going with a set of rebuilt 452's and returned the valve train to stock after hearing horror stories on another forum regarding the 440 Source Roller Rockers. Apparently, the pin that hold the roller tip in place can break causing the tip to fail. What's left is a pitch fork pressing down on the retainer eventually loosening the keepers resulting in a dropped valve. I've had enough problems with this build to go through that so I went back to stock. As for the piston, I ground down the sharp edges with a Dremel Tool, cleaned it up and ran it.
I'm happy to report ZERO issues so far. No knocks, pings, rattles or tics. I'm hoping the worst is behind me and I can finish this build without further incident and enjoy this drop top boat.
