It has a knocking 440and a bent front bumper but interior is good (although not brilliant) glass and most trim good. Needs a new carpet but I think that's the least of its worries! It has a manual top and manual windows which I thougth kind of strange. I can post pics tomorrow when I get back.
Before I go I'd like to know what to look for on the data plate to ID the car properly, just to make sure it is what is is. Can someone please tell me what the data plate should read for a 68 Newport convertible in yellow with a black top, black vinyl (?) interior, manual/ power windows, 440, torqueflite, etc. Is there a code for a leather interior?
What and where is the body code for paint colours?
I know you can tell a lot from a Chrysler data plate as opposed to a GM one but don't know what the codes are or where on the data plate they will be. Data plate is on the driver's side inner fender top right?
I'm a bit wary of the fact that it has a manual top since I can't think the manual top was standard and a power top an option back then. Maybe the power rams failed, or the motor burnt out or hte rams leaked so someone took all the top mechanism out. Or maybe worse someone put in a manual frame from another car, or worse oit's a 2 door coupe cut down to make a convertible. Asides from the Data Plate, how do I check the sheetmetal work for a convertible? How do I check the top mechanism for signs of a missing mechanism and are the meachanisms eeasy to get? I know the top switch is an arm and a leg - it's the same switch as the switch for the tailgate window on my 440 powered '67 Town & Country and people are asking $150 plus for a switch!!
What trim should be on the car? I've been looking at pictures of relevant C bodys and my '67 range brochure can't deciperher whether the car should have one or two chrome trim strips (one along the top bodyline and one along the lower body line and through the side skirt) or a painted coachline. It has the chrome hockey shaped trims on the leading edge of the front fenders (that go up the fenders and along to the leading edge of the hood) missing and blanked off with some horrible silver painted peice of riveted on flat steel. Yuk!
Asides from the 440 rebuild it needs a new front bumper which is twisted badly on the drivers side. Floors and doors seem solid whch makes it seem a worthwhile project. I didn't get round to looking at the back when I first saw it.
Thanks all! regards, Nick in Ireland

) I
thought I was in for a challenging project when I restored my 66 300. It was a lot of work but at the end of it, most satisfying.
